Across Sub-Saharan Africa, people are turning ambition into action, creativity into enterprise, and learning into opportunity. Through partnerships in education, the arts, skills development and cultural exchange, the British Council works alongside individuals and institutions to create pathways for growth, connection and lasting impact.

This collection brings together stories from 12 countries across the continent—stories of students discovering new possibilities, artists finding new audiences, entrepreneurs building thriving ventures, and communities strengthened through collaboration and exchange. Each story reflects the determination, talent and ingenuity shaping Africa's future, while demonstrating what can be achieved when people are given the opportunity to learn, create and lead.

Kenya

We collaborate with the Kenyan government and local partners to create meaningful impact in education, English language, and cultural sectors.

Ghana

In Arts and Culture, we build the capacity of creatives (fashion, film, music,) in enterprise development and script writing using both on-line and in-person tools.

Nigeria

Our work contributes to global education policy development, builds stronger education systems and supports international mobility and collaboration between researchers and scientists.

Tanzania

In Tanzania, we draw on more than seven decades of presence, having worked in the country since 1950 to build trust, opportunity and enduring connections between Tanzania and the UK.

South Africa

By aligning UK expertise with South Africa’s priorities in education, science, skills and culture, we help strengthen institutions, expand opportunity and support inclusive growth.

Ethiopia

We foster connections, understanding, and trust between the UK and Ethiopia through its initiatives in arts and culture, basic education, English language, administering exams, and strengthening civil societies.

Sudan

For more than seven decades, the British Council has worked with people and institutions in Sudan to expand opportunity through education, skills, culture and international connection.

Rwanda

The British Council in Rwanda fosters connections, understanding, and trust between the UK and Rwanda through a variety of programmes.

Zimbabwe

Through long-term partnerships in education, culture and skills, we strengthen connections between Zimbabwe and the UK while helping people and institutions access opportunity, knowledge and global networks.
