The Connecting Classrooms programme exposed Nomfuneko Dziba to cutting-edge approaches designed to cultivate analytical reasoning skills among learners.
Ms. Nomfuneko Dziba began her teaching career with ambitions of reaching the top, and after three decades of dedication and learning, she now serves as the Circuit Manager in Eastern Cape, South Africa, overseeing 26 schools. Starting as an English teacher, she progressed through various roles, including head of department and school principal. Her approach to teaching was transformed by the Connecting Classrooms programme by the British Council during her time as a principal.
The Connecting Classrooms programme introduced Ms. Dziba to innovative teaching methods focused on nurturing critical thinking in students. Embracing these approaches, she empowered her students to think creatively, enriching their learning experience. Additionally, the programme provided digital literacy skills, essential for rural schools like hers. Reflecting on her experience, she remarks, ‘Gone are the days when teachers were perceived as the sole fount of knowledge. The Connecting Classrooms programme enlightened us to the idea that students also possess valuable insights.’
Ms. Dziba's implementation of the programme's teachings resulted in tangible outcomes at her school, including the transformation of disused classrooms into a vibrant library. This initiative earned her school the reputation of being the ‘reading school’ within Eastern Cape, highlighting its significant impact on fostering a culture of reading. Her remarkable achievements led to recognition from the Department of Education, earning her a bursary to pursue a bachelor’s degree in English at Rhodes University.
Undeterred in her pursuit of professional development, Ms. Dziba enrolled in the Instructional Leadership Training by the British Council, which enhanced her leadership skills and prepared her for her current role as Circuit Manager.
After thirty years of dedicated service in the education sector, Ms. Nomfuneko Dziba is preparing to transition to a new chapter. With a wealth of experience and knowledge gleaned from British Council programmes, she plans to establish her consultancy company. Her aim is to extend her impact beyond geographical boundaries, leveraging her expertise to effect positive change not only within the education sector but in broader spheres of influence.
